National Collaborative Commissioning Unit Brings First Eating Disorder Service into Wales

The National Collaborative Commissioning Unit (NCCU) has worked with private providers, Elysium Healthcare, to bring the first eating disorder service into Wales.

Meadow Ward at Tŷ Glyn Ebwy provides care and treatment for women who have an eating disorder including anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa and atypical eating disorders.

The approach is to restore a healthy body weight and food intake and address psychological problems during treatment.

The Multidisciplinary Team (MDT) at Tŷ Glyn Ebwy is made up of the Registered Manager, Consultant Psychiatrist, Nurses, Speciality Doctor, Practice Nurse, Healthcare Workers, Psychologist, Dietician, Occupational Therapist and Social Worker.

The is the collaborative commissioning service of NHS Wales.  It leads in quality assurance and improvement for NHS Wales and is responsible for delivering national commissioning programmes for mental health and learning disability services.

Adrian Clarke, Deputy Director and Head of Nursing at the NCCU said:  “Bringing this service into Wales is an important step forward for patients with eating disorders in Wales.

“We know that for patients being away from family, friends, and their support networks can give an added level of anxiety at what is already a difficult time for patients.

“Having this service in Wales, not only makes it better for the patient in terms of their experience, but also means that the service can work more closely with the patient’s clinical team towards their clinical outcomes.

Mr Clarke continued:  “Our NCCU team has worked closely with health board colleagues to support the private supplier in establishing the service and is continuing this support on a monthly basis, as well as listening to patient feedback, to ensure the service is setup in the best way possible.”

The current service at Ty Glyn Ebwy (Adult Eating Disorders) began in October 2023 and was officially opened in November by Lynn Neagle MS.
